Preventing Foot Ailment in Diabetic Patients through Better Nutrition

One factor that allows diabetic patients to have a healthier life instead of a bed-ridden one is better nutrition. The famous saying, ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’ is as relevant to diabetes as it was for fire safety that Benjamin Franklin originally referred to.

Studies have shown that 60–70% of the diabetic population develop mild to severe diabetic nerve damage, known as neuropathy. Consequently, diabetes is the leading cause of lower limb amputations. 15% of diabetic people experience foot ulcers, and 24% of those will require a foot amputation. In addition to neuropathy, diabetic patients are also at a high risk of slow wound healing. These factors add up to higher treatment costs, increased burden on healthcare providers, and lower life expectancy.
